kyoto was spared from air raids during wwii. it has 17 sites listed as world heritage (paris has apparently 4). the old architecture is largely preserverd, there are thousands of temples and hundreds of shrines, and the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. after visiting two weekends in a row, i still have much to explore.
